Marble Fireplace Surrounds & Hearths in London

A fireplace is the first thing people notice in a room. GMQ Stone makes bespoke marble, granite and quartz fireplace surrounds and hearths, cut to your exact measurements and fitted by our own team across London.

Made to Measure, Not Off the Shelf

Every fireplace starts with a home visit. We measure the opening, chimney breast and floor, then cut your surround and hearth in our NW10 workshop so it fits first time – whether it's a Victorian terrace or a new-build living room.

What We Make

  • Full marble fireplace surrounds
  • Granite and marble hearths (back and front)
  • Slips and inset panels
  • Mantel shelves
  • Replacement hearths for existing fireplaces

Fireplace Hearths

A stone hearth protects your floor and finishes the fireplace. We make granite, marble and quartz hearths in any size or shape, including back hearths, front hearths and one-piece hearths for wood-burning stoves.

For stoves and open fires, hearths must meet Building Regulations Approved Document J. For example, the non-combustible area in front of a freestanding stove must extend at least 225mm from the door. We'll make your hearth to the size your stove installer (HETAS) specifies.

Types of Fireplace Hearth

The word hearth covers a few different parts of a fireplace, and it helps to know which one you need before you ask for a quote:

  • Constructional hearth: the non-combustible base built into the floor under an open fire or stove, usually concrete. This is a building job and is normally done by your builder or stove installer.
  • Superimposed (decorative) hearth: the visible stone slab that sits on top of the constructional hearth. This is the part we make, in granite, marble or quartz.
  • Back hearth: the stone panel inside the fireplace opening, behind the fire.
  • Front hearth: the slab that projects into the room in front of the fireplace.
  • Stove hearth: a one-piece slab sized for a freestanding wood burner or multi-fuel stove.

Hearth Sizes and Building Regulations

For solid fuel stoves and open fires, the hearth must meet Approved Document J of the Building Regulations. As a guide, a freestanding stove needs a constructional hearth of at least 840mm by 840mm, and the non-combustible area must extend at least 225mm in front of the stove door and 150mm to each side. Some modern stoves are certified to stand on a 12mm hearth; others need a deeper one.

Your stove manual and your HETAS-registered installer will confirm the exact size and thickness your appliance needs. Send us those figures and we will cut your hearth to suit, with clean polished edges and any rounded corners you want.

Which Stone Is Best for a Hearth?

  • Granite: the most heat-tolerant choice and very hard-wearing. Black granite is the most popular hearth stone because it hides soot and ash.
  • Marble: elegant and traditional, ideal for period fireplaces. It is softer than granite, so it can mark more easily and needs sealing.
  • Quartz: a consistent colour that can match your kitchen worktops. Quartz contains resin, so it suits electric and gas fires and decorative hearths better than hearths in front of wood burners.

Marble Fireplace Surrounds for Period and Modern Homes

Classic white Carrara and Calacatta marble suits period homes; polished black granite gives a sharp modern look; quartz offers a consistent colour with less upkeep. We can match your fireplace to your kitchen worktop or flooring.

Many London homes still have their original Victorian or Edwardian fireplaces. A new marble surround can restore the look of a period room, or give a modern living room a clean, architectural focal point. We make surrounds to your measurements, from simple slab designs to classic Carrara surrounds with a mantel shelf.

If you are updating a whole room, we can cut matching window sills, shelves or a bespoke mantel from the same slab, so the stone matches throughout.

How We Make and Fit Your Fireplace

  1. Free quote: send us photos of your fireplace, rough measurements and the stone you like.
  2. Measuring: we visit to measure the opening, chimney breast, floor and any existing hearth. If you have a new stove, we work from its manual.
  3. Making: your hearth or surround is cut, edged and polished in our NW10 workshop.
  4. Fitting: our team removes the old hearth if needed and fits the new stone, normally in a single visit.

Most fireplace and hearth jobs take around 1 to 2 weeks from measuring to fitting.

Caring for a Stone Hearth

  • Let ash and embers cool fully before you sweep them up.
  • Clean granite and marble with a pH-neutral stone cleaner; avoid acidic or abrasive products.
  • Reseal marble and lighter granites every 6 to 12 months to protect against soot and stains.
  • Use a mat or log basket rather than dragging logs across the surface.

Fireplace and Hearth FAQs

Can you replace just the hearth?+

Yes. We measure, remove the old hearth and fit the new one.

Which stone is best for a stove hearth?+

Granite is the most heat-tolerant; your stove manual will state the minimum hearth size and thickness.

How long does a fireplace take?+

Usually around 1–2 weeks from measuring to fitting.

Do you cover my area?+

We work across London and Hertfordshire.

How thick should a stove hearth be?+

It depends on your stove. Many stoves need a 125mm constructional hearth, but some are certified for a 12mm hearth. Check your stove manual or ask your installer, and we will make the stone to that thickness.

Can a hearth be made in one piece?+

Yes, in most cases. One-piece hearths look cleaner and have no joints to collect ash. Very large hearths may need a joint, which we place where it is least visible.

Can you fit a hearth for a gas or electric fire?+

Yes. Gas and electric fires often need only a decorative hearth, which gives you more choice of stone, including quartz.

Do you remove old hearths and surrounds?+

Yes. We can take out and dispose of an old hearth or surround as part of the fitting.

Do you fit stoves?+

We make and fit the stone. Stove installation, flues and sign-off should be done by a HETAS-registered installer, and we are happy to work alongside yours.
